How to Cook Chicken Fried Steak

September 19, 2019 by Wrenn Leave a Comment

This Chicken Fried Steak is one of my top comfort foods from my childhood. Arturo prepares his Chicken Fried Steak a little differently than Mom did. However, it is still amazing and brings back those feelings of comfort that any good comfort food meal will do.

I didn’t learn my cooking skills from my Momma!

When I was growing up, I have many memories of my Mom going to estate sales to find treasures for our home. She had a real eye for putting things together and making the house look great…but when it came to cooking, the interest just wasn’t there. We had a lot of take-out and Pizza Hut pizza every Friday night and as a result, my cooking skills are somewhat limited. Even though cooking was not a priority for her, she did have a few select recipes up her sleeve that she could knock out of the park! One of them was Chicken Fried Steak and to this day, it is still one of my favorite meals. I consider it total comfort food!I don’t have many photos of me and my Momma! I think I need to fix this! Until there here is one of my favoirtes of she and Leo!

Chicken Fried Steak Cooking Tips

  • Chicken fried steak is best served with mashed potatoes and green peas in our opinion. However, fried okra pairs nicely with it too.
  • It is best to use a tenderized round steak.
  • Did you know it is called “chicken fried steak” because it is prepared in the same manner as traditional fried chicken?! Yup…that’s how it got its name.
  • If you overcoat your round steak and run out of flour don’t be afraid to just add more flour and keep breading the last of your steaks.

Ingredient List

Round steak, tenderized
Flour
The Cowboy’s Grill Seasoning
Egg
Buttermilk

How to make Chicken Fried Steak

Start by combining flour and half of the grill seasoning in a dish and the egg and buttermilk with the other half of grill seasoning in another.

Dredge the steaks in the flour mixture, then the egg wash and back in the flour mixture.

Heat one inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high at to 350 degrees.

Place dredged round steaks in the heated oil and fry until golden brown on one side (about 5 minutes) then flip and cook on the other side (it won’t take as long on the other side). Monitor and manage the heat as necessary, trying to maintain 350 degrees while frying the steaks.

Remove from oil and place on a cooling rack turned upside down on a paper towel lined cookie sheet and place in a warm oven while cooking the reminder of the steaks.
